Transformers and Instrument Transformers

SUB 105 'Transformers and Instrument Transformers' is a 3-credit course designed for technicians entering the electrical power industry. Students will gain foundational knowledge of power transformers, including their fundamental theory, types, construction, and cooling methods. The curriculum delves into critical maintenance aspects such as transformer oil diagnostics, testing procedures, and common failure modes. A significant portion of the course is dedicated to instrument transformers, specifically current transformers (CTs) and potential transformers (PTs), covering their applications in metering, protection, and control circuits. Through theoretical instruction and hands-on laboratory experiences, students will develop the skills necessary to safely install, operate, and troubleshoot these vital components within electrical substations and industrial settings, adhering to industry best practices and safety standards.
